Conrad came back from a tough loss last week to pound Shelby, 44-0, much to the delight of Homecoming fans on Saturday afternoon.

Senior running back Clay Winters took the opening kickoff and got the home boys good field position at the 40 yard line

Winters also took the first handoff of the contest and raced up the field for nine yards, going off tackle.

Then on the next play, senior running back Sam Larson also went off tackle on the right side, got to the outside and turned the jets on, rumbling for 45 yards to the seven yard line.

Quarterback Joe Ries then slashed his way into the end zone for six points. He followed that up with a flip to junior running back Devin VandenBos for two points and Conrad had an 8-0 lead and all the points they would need.

The team marched up the field, covering 60 yards in just three plays.

After starting on the 33 yard line in their first possession, a modest drive was shut down, helped by a big tackle for a seven yard loss by Lucas Schultz and a pass-pick by Ries.

A running play with Luke Schlosser netted four yards, Winters hauled in a pass for 13, Ben Moerkerke caught another and all of a sudden the Cowboys were at the one yard line knocking on the door for another score.

Ries slide into the house for the score. The PAT was not good, but Conrad had a 14-0 lead.

With just over two minutes to go in the quarter, the Cowboys took possession at their 47 yard line.

Winters raced down field for 12 yards. Two passes to Moerkerke  by Ries were incomplete. On a third down play, Ries dropped back to pass again and it looked like the Coyote defense might stop him. From 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage, Ries found senior wide-out Sam Carroll, almost all alone in the end zone and launched a TD strike.

Conrad led 20-0 after the first quarter.

Before half-time, Moerkerke was on the receiving end of a TD pass in the corner of the end zone for a 26-0 lead at the intermission.

In that first half, Ries was of 6-12 passing for 124 yards and two scores. Conrad had 240 yards of total offense and the defense shut down Shelby, who had 0 yards passing on three attempts.

In the third period, the home boys continued the blitz with VandenBos scoring a TD on a 15 yard scamper. On their next possession VandenBos and Schlosser ate up yardage on the ground with Schlosser finding the end zone on a four-yard romp and a 38-0 lead. The team’s second TD of the quarter covered 62 yards in just four plays.

Shane Larson a freshman running back added a fourth quarter score to make the final 44-0.

The Cowboys play a tough game against Cut Bank on Friday which will also be Senior Night.

Eleven seniors will strap on the helmet for the last time with introductions starting about 6:30 p.m., right before the 7 p.m. kick off.
