The Cowboy wrestlers put on a good showing in their opening tournament at the Billings Invitational.
Facing off with some of the toughest AA and A competition in the east and Wyoming, Coach Kevin Moritz commented, “I’m very proud of this team in its first meet of the year.” There were 17 teams competing in the annual event that traditionally gets the wrestling season going.
Picking up where he left off last year, Luke Schlosser, hitting the mat at 119 pounds, placed first defeating Karson Kukes of Laurel.
In being named the Cowboy Wrestler of the Week, Moritz commented, “Luke showed a great desire and a no-quit attitude in all of his matches.”
Team standing and scores went like this: Gillette 255, Billings Senior 238, Billings Skyview 220, Laurel 205, Billings West 177, Billings Skyview JV 138, CONRAD 70, Buffalo 61, Billings Senior JV 60, Huntley Project 59, Shepherd 50, Conrad JV 21, Billings West JV 20, Billings Central 11, Shepherd JV 4, Huntley Project JV 3 and Laurel JV 1.
Morgan Koenig, Garrett Moritz and Lucas Schultz all placed fifth at the tourney.
Moritz and Schultz shared the Stepped It Up award. Both showed great heart and stamina while winning five of eight matches to place fifth in the tournament.
Brandon French was named the Practice Wrestler of the Week for willingness to attend camps in the off-season and stay after practice to work extra on his moves.
All of the Conrad wrestlers wrestled varsity over the weekend, so there was no JV Wrestler of the Week award.
Thursday the team goes to Shelby for a meet and over the weekend they are at the Mining City Duals in Butte.
Team members include Blaine Berg, French, Colt Harris, M. Koenig, Moritz, Tyler Nelson, Justin Ratzburg, Tyler Richter, Schlosser, L. Schultz, Tyler Schultz, Dakota Suta, Ryan Townsend, Blake Underdahl and Blayne Underdahl.
