Rashelle Johns floated home a short hook shot after pulling down an offensive rebound and got the Cowgirls rolling early to a 45-28 win in the season home opener on Thursday.
Following that junior Taylor Judisch raced up the court, going coast-to-coast to score off a Coyote turnover. She and Johns scored the first eight points for the home girls and from there they never looked back.
Shelby’s Jordan Mahr finally got the Coyotes on the score board with a bucket, but that was the only scoring Shelby did in the first frame as they trailed 11-2.
Hayley Orcutt drilled a couple of freebies from the line and Morgan VanDyke was 1-2 for the other Cowgirl points.
Conrad led 23-14 at the break. There were no ties or lead changes. Just before the half the Coyotes came close, 13-11, Johns and Orcutt both knocked down a couple of buckets, back-to-back.
One Orcutt score came off a short jumper in heavy traffic from a feed by VanDyke. Johns score came off a nifty assist from Jayde Richardson and the team was back up to a nine point lead.
In the third period, Erica Grubb drilled a long trey putting the team up 28-18 and after a quite three quarters, VanDyke air mailed home three long shots coming down the stretch helping to ice the game.
The team had a nice all around balanced game.
Johns led the scoring 14 points and pulled in nine rebounds. With her three treys to help, VanDyke banged home 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and six steals.
Judisch penciled in eight points to go with 10 rebounds and six steals. Orcutt hit the nets for seven markers had two assists and two rebounds. Grubb canned five points, had four boards and a steal.
Friday Fairfield came to town and early on it looked like Conrad was going to run away with a big win.
Judisch could not be stopped in the first period as she scored 10 of her game high 16 points while Richardson torched the nets for six points.
As hot as they were in the first period, the team turned cold in the second quarter, with Judisch scoring only one bucket from the field and Orcutt and VanDyke each getting a free throw.
Meanwhile the Eagles are tossing up 13 points to lead 28-23 at the break.
Conrad scored only 13 points over the second half and the Eagles coasted to a 62-36 win.
Judisch ended the night with her 16 points, Richardson tossed up eight, Orcutt added six, VanDyke four, and Grubb had a first quarter bucket for two points.
The Cowgirls hit on 14 shots from the field and just 5-14 at the line. Fairfield scored on 13 shots from the floor and was 13-25 from the line.
