Rural Fire District filing deadline

The annual election for trustees of the Rural Fire District will be held in the spring of 2012.

Candidates may be nominated by petition filed with the county election administrator and petition forms are available at the Clerk and Recorder’s office in the Courthouse.

There is no filing fee.

The nominating petition must be signed by at least five electors of the district.  The district is all of Pondera County except within the incorporated area of the City of Conrad and the Town of Valier and the Lewis and Clark National Forest.

The Trustee position up for election is one Conrad area position, currently filled by Keith Hruska and the Valier area position currently filled by Ernie Boumans.  Other Trustees currently serving are Bert Rigby and Roger Keith of the Conrad area and William Breding, representing the Dupuyer area.  Trustees serve a three year term and are nominated by district.

The filing period for this position closes on Feb. 16 2012 at 5 p.m.  If only one candidate files for the position, the election will not be held and the candidate who filed will be elected by acclamation.

If no petitions for nominations are filed, the Board of County Commissioners shall appoint a trustee to fill the position.

The Rural Fire District was formed to provide fire protection in all of Pondera County except within the City of Conrad, Town of Valier and the Lewis and Clark National Forest.

The trustees manage the affairs of the fire district, including the preparation of the annual budget and contracting for rural fire protection.

Taxes are levied to fund the district.
