KABOOM! — Luke Schlosser, 119, slam dunks Travis Vermulm of Cut Bank to the mat in the championship finals at the divisional meet on Saturday. Schlosser came on to pin Vermulm in 3:46 for his second win of the tournament and a divisional title. Conrad won the meet. Finishing in first place among nine Northern Divisional teams, the Cowboy wrestlers showed they will be a squad to be reckoned with at the state tournament in Billings this weekend.
The home boys placed 13 wrestlers in the top four and they have their ticket punched for the big dance.
Team scores and places looked like this: 1. CONRAD 183, 2. Harlem 142, 3. Malta 127, 4. Chinook 112, 5. Cut Bank 89.5, 6. Shelby 85, 7. Big Sandy 76.5, 8. CJ-I 69, and 9. Heart Butte 17. Overall, the team was 22-18 on the mats.
The top five teams were in the same position last year, except for Conrad and Harlem. The Wildcats edged the Cowboys by five points to take first place, 151-146. Not so this year.
Coach Kevin Moritz was more than happy with the team results and commented, “This was just a great tournament, and we were all together and healthy.”
Asked about the tournament in Billings, He said, “We have some small injuries to deal with this week, but I’m sure we will be ready by Friday.”
Going by weight class here is how the wrestlers placed at the tournament:
Morgan Koenig 105-1st; Blake Underdahl 112-3rd; Luke Schlosser 119-1st; Blaine Berg 119-3rd; Garrett Moritz 130-2nd; Dakota Suta 130-4th; Colt Harris 135-2nd; Tyler Richter 135-4th; Brandon French 140-4th; Tyler Schultz 145-4th; Blayne Underdahl 152-3rd; Lucas Schultz 171-1st; Tyler Nelson 189-4th; and Justin Ratzburg 215-6th.
The entire team including team manager Ryan Orcutt, and stat takers Shayla Munroe and Kelci Watterud were selected as the Cowboy Wrestler of the Week. Moritz said, “It took the whole team to make the effort to place first at the tournament.”
In taking first, Schultz went 2-0, winning his matches by a quick pin time of :35 and then getting a big 9-7 decision win.
Koenig, 2-0, got into the championship round with a 12-5 win and then stopped his man with a 4-0 decision.
Schlosser, 2-0, won both his matches by pins in times of 1:32 and 3:46.
The all-class wresting tournament will be back on the Metradome. You may recall that in 2010 a tornado damaged the Metra complex and the wrestlers were split up around the state.
This year, the tourney is back to being an all class (AA-A-B-C) event.
The spotlight will fall on four wrestlers as they get on the mats, Schlosser, Cole Mendenhall of Great Falls High, Ben Stroh from Chinook and Luke Zeiger of Glasgow.
Each can become a four time state champion, something just 19 other wrestlers have accomplished.
There are a handful of three time champions from Conrad and they include Scott Schlosser (Luke’s brother), Nick DeGroat, and the Jones boys, Eddie and Danny.
The Metra will be rocking on Saturday.
