Tennis teams get some court action

Conrad tennis took to the courts for their first meet of the season hosting Cut Bank, Havre and Fergus.

The annual Conrad Invitational took place for the first time in three years as Mother Nature finally decided to cooperate.  All of the teams enjoyed a super day of Tennis with Havre sweeping the Boys and Girls Duals, going 3-0 on the day.

The Cowgirls finished 2-1 and the Cowboys went 1-1-1 on the day splitting with Cut Bank and defeating Fergus.  The Cut Bank Boys also defeated Fergus to finish 1-1-1 and their Girls went 1-2 beating Fergus on the courts.  Fergus went 0-3 in both the girls and boys duals.

“As coaches we were proud of our player’s attitude and play over the weekend,” said Coach Kendall Griggs.

He went on to say, “Though we were down in numbers and forfeited numerous team points many of the players competed in two matches in each dual getting much needed court time.  We look strong for the start, but also identified areas to improve on over the coming weeks.”

The dual format consisted of a 6-game no-add pro-set.  Meaning first player to four points wins the game and the first to six games wins the match.

In boys singles #1 Austin Zomer went 2-2, losing in tight tie breakers to Jensen (H) 5-6 (6-8) and Matt (CB) 5-6 (5-7) and defeating Bruno (F) 6-4 and Malone (H#3) 6-1.

Steven Peters at #2 finished 3-0 defeating Grimson (H) 6-4, Czech (CB) 6-2 and Hould (F) 6-1.  Peters also played an exhibition dual with Blaine Berg and defeated Phillips/Behl (F) 6-2.  Blaine Berg went 1-2 in singles losing to Little Dog (CB) 3-6, Wagner (H) 0-6 and defeating Myhre (F) 6-2.

In doubles, Berg and Jacob Gouchenour were beat by Hovet/Smith (H) 6-0. Jacob Gouchenour was 0-1 in singles play losing to Wandler (CB) 2-6.

In doubles Luke Schlosser and Camron Janzen opened their season 3-0 defeating, Beurman/Jennings (CB) 6-0, Rhines/Grisak (H) 6-5 (7-3) and Bruno/Hould (F) 6-3.

Brett Peters and Tyler Padilla were 3-1 as a pair defeating Francom/Kraft (CB) 6-5 (8-6) and then losing to Kloos/Beurman (CB) 5-6 (4-7).  They beat Holden/Hellegard (H) 6-1 and Olson/Wright (F) 6-1.  In singles Brett Peters defeated Kremer (F) 6-0 and Padilla beat Kremer (F) 6-2.

In girls singles Jade Rodriguez lost 3-6 to Paige Larson (CB).  Kristine Warlick went 3-0 in singles defeating Hoffman (CB) 6-0, Chagnon (H) 6-1 and Monger (F) 6-3.

Warlick was 1-0 in doubles with Megan Fetters defeating Gobert/Kraft (CB) 6-2.  Fetters was 1-1 in singles play losing to Lambourne (H) 4-6 and beating Anderson (CB) 6-0.  In doubles Fetters paired with Morgan VanDyke and went 1-1, defeating Cichosz/McCormick (H) 6-3 and losing to Harmon/Monger (F) 3-6.  Fetters paired with Amy Bailey and defeated Wickens/Campano (F) but lost playing with Trinity Cox to Jappee/Graham (H) 3-6.

Doubles Emily Weisgram and  VanDyke defeated Altenburg/Kraft of Cut Bank 6-2.  VanDyke then went on to defeat Herring (H) 6-5 (7-3) in singles.  In doubles play with Trinity Cox, VanDyke defeated Backer/Harmon (F) 6-0.  Amy Bailey and Trinity Cox were 1-1 in doubles defeating Fitzgerald/Johnson (CB) 6-0 and losing to Bresler/Don (H) in a tie-breaker 5-6 (4-7).  In singles Bailey went 1-1 beating Allen (F) 6-0 and losing to Ralph (H) 0-6.  Trinity Cox was 2-0 in singles besting Novak (CB) 6-1 and Wickens (F) 6-0.

Conrad takes to the courts Thursday afternoon in Great Falls for the GFH/CMR Duals. They then travel to Havre on April 7 for the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Tournament over Easter Break.    On April 10 they travel again to Cut Bank for an evening Dual.
