It was a short trip across the mountains to home for the Conrad tennis teams on Friday.
Late in the afternoon with sirens blaring and horns honking, the whole world knew that not one, but both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams were state champions.
The overall quality and depth of the teams proved to be too much for the rest of the competition on the Missoula courts.
Coach Kendall Griggs guided his charges to the number one position, assisted by Greg Jensen. The last time there was a tennis championship team was in 2000 when Jensen was the head coach.
After play on Wednesday the top five boys’ teams with their scores looked like this: 1, Conrad 24, 2. Troy 18, 3. Loyola 16, 4. Valley Christian 15 and 5. Bigfork 14.
After play on Wednesday, the Cowgirls were sitting in second place. Team scores went like this for the top five teams: 1. Fairfield 20, 2. Conrad 17, 3. Chinook 14, 4. Cut Bank 13 and 5. Bigfork 12.
In early singles play, Kristine Warlick defeated teammate Emily Weisgram by scores of 7-4, 6-4 and then fell in semifinal play by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play the team of Megan Fetters-Jade Rodriguez lost after getting to the quarter finals by score of 6-4, 6-3 and then again in loser out play by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Back to boys action, the doubles team of Luke Schlosser and Camron Janzen breezed into the championship semifinals with a 7-6 (10-8) 6-2 over a Loyola team.
The senior-sophomore team of Kesler Martin-Brett Peters got into the consolation semi’s with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win.
Junior Austin Zomer got to the singles quarterfinals before losing to a Saint Ignatius player, 6-3, 6-2.
On Thursday the doubles team of Schlosser-Janzen did what they did all season long; win.
They handily defeated a Valley Christian team 6-2, 6-2 to lead the Cowboys to a state title.
The team of Martin-Peters placed fourth in the consolation brackets, falling to a Loyola team 6-1, 6-2.
However, the team places scores turned out like this: 1. Conrad 42, 2. Valley Christian 29, 3. Bigfork 24, 4. Loyola, Ronan and Troy 21, 5. Cut Bank 16.
It should be noted here, Schlosser was a state champion on the wrestling squad. The Cowboy senior goes down the graduation isle with two state championships.
The home girls came back from being three points down to Fairfield on Wednesday to win all the marbles, edging out Chinook by one point.
Team scores and places looked like this: 1. Conrad 28, 2. Chinook 27, 3. Fairfield 26, 4. Cut Bank 24, 5. Superior-Albertson 20.
