The bodies of Arnold Waldner and his six year old son Zackary were recovered on Monday at 9 a.m. after an apparent drowning that took place in an irrigation canal southwest of Valier.

Mr. Waldner and his two sons were fishing on the Birch Creek Hutterite colony Sunday evening when the boy fell into the water.  The father attempted to rescue his son and they both drowned.

Waldner’s four year old son witnessed the event and ran for help.  The father and son were members of the Birch Creek Colony.

Deputy Pondera County Coroner Ed Erickson commented, “The water was about five feet deep and moving pretty fast.”

A search and rescue attempt was made by authorities around 8 p.m. on Sunday, with officials calling off the search around midnight due to darkness.
