A lot of folks showed up for the Cowboy scrimmage on Saturday.

It’s a new year, a new coach and expectations and excitement is high.

For the District 1B, those “in the know” have picked the home boys to finish fourth out of five teams.

The prediction from the Tribune’s football guide has Fairfield in first followed by Choteau, Cut Bank, Conrad and Shelby.

Head Coach Ryan Fetherson, a former Grizzly All-State defensive end, may have something to say about that. Bring on the Wild Cats.

There are 36 players out doing two-a-day practices, in the morning and early evening with nine seniors. The Cowboys look good on the depth chart.

However, getting the nod at starting quarterback goes to a sophomore, 6-1, 170 pound Shane Larson.

Watch for senior Devin VandenBos 6-2, 185 pound running back to be ripping through the line and wide-outs Justin Ratzburg and Kyle Dyrud to be hauling in passes from Larson.

Other seniors include Seth Diedrich, Kellen Murack, and Ryan Townsend.

Practices have stressed play review, special team play, conditioning and offensive and defensive work.

Coach Fetherson is pleased with the practice session. “I’m seeing a lot of positive play on the practice field,” he said.

The preview scrimmage on Saturday emphasized proper alignment, formation recognition and full-speed execution.

Fans will recall that last year the home boys started the season with a forfeit win over Harlem.

So far, everything is a go with the Wildcats for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday. Come on out, grab a hot dog and watch the new coach rack up his first “W”.

It doesn’t get much better than this
