John W. (Bill) Rappold
 

John W. (Bill) Rappold was born to John and Pansie Rappold on Nov. 9, 1940.  He was of German decent; his grandfather, Karl, immigrated to the United States from Wurttemberg, Germany in 1876.  Karl arrived in the Dupuyer area in 1882 to file a homestead claim.  It was this homestead that later became Bill’s lifelong home.   Following a period of failing health Bill Rappold died at the Pondera Nursing Home on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Bill graduated with honors from Valier High School with the graduating class of 1957.  He was a self-motivated learner and valued education, as he completed his education two years early.  Music, carpentry, animals, collecting antiques and art, as well as gardening were some of Bill’s passions in life.
Bill was a rancher by trade, working on the family ranch throughout his life.  He had a great devotion to public service.  As Pondera County Commissioner Bill served on the Executive Board of MACO where he held the office of 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President and then became Chairman of MACO in 1997-98.  He served as the chairman of District #4 and #5 of County Commissioners for one term, served on the Department of Agriculture and Trust Insurance Board for MACO and the State of Montana Juvenile Justice Detention Board.  Bill was a member of the Valier School Board of Trustees for more than 15 years, Pondera County Hospital Commission, served on the Golden Triangle Mental Health Board, TLC, Counsel on Aging and the Pondera County Park Board.   He loved to share his music and fond memories with his family and friends.  Spending time with his nieces and nephews was a cherished time for Bill.
Bill is preceded in death by his father, John in 1986.  He is survived by his mother, Pansie Rappold, brother Karl (Teri) Rappold of Dupuyer; his sister Karen (Darryl) Burditt of Conrad; nieces and nephews, John (Becky) Rappold of Dupuyer; D.J. Burditt of Conrad; Julie (Brian) Armstrong of Lakeland, Fla.; Debbie (Jon) Hildahl of Spokane, Wash.; Hadi (Jim) Sale of Bend, Ore.; Kellen Johnson of Bend; and Emily Johnson of Portland,
After twelve years as Pondera County Commissioner, Bill enjoyed the remaining years of his life at home on the family ranch.  Bill will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  Funeral Service were held  on Sept. 11 at the Dupuyer Community Hall, interment followed at the Mountain View Cemetery.  Pondera Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given in his name to the Pondera Medical Center, 805 Sunset Blvd, Conrad, MT 59425 where he served on the Hospital Commission for 12 years or to the Peace Hospice of Pondera County, 300 N Virginia #308, Conrad, MT 59425.
