Evelyn Rufsvold Herman, 85, a former Conrad resident, passed away in Kennewick, Wash., on Dec. 2. After living in Conrad since 1954, she moved to her daughter Nancy’s home in Oct. 2004.
Evelyn was born Jan. 12, 1921 in Englevale, N.D., the eldest child of Conrad and Eleanor Iverson Rufsvold. She was educated in North Dakota schools and graduated from Kathryn High School in 1939.
She married Robert Jay Herman on Aug. 14, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, Minn. They lived in Fairdale, N.D., for one year where her husband was principal and coach in the high school.
Bob and Evelyn moved to Fargo; N.D., Sioux Falls, S.D., and Minneapolis, Minn., while her husband served with the Army Ordinance Department during the war. In 1945, they moved to Hinsdale for nine years and then to Conrad in 1954. Bob was high school principal until retiring in 1976.
Evelyn worked at Conrad’s Real Estate and Insurance Agency until retiring in 1976.
She was a member of the Pondera Valley Lutheran Church, a 50-year member and Past Matron of the Eastern Star and was active in many organizations. Her many interests included sewing, arts and crafts, reading and traveling. She was a collector, her favorites being her Hummel figurines and Bing & Grondahl blue plates.
She is survived by three children including Susan Conquergood, Helena, R. Jay Herman (Julie), Great Falls and Nancy Pringle (John), Kennewick; grandchildren Bryan Conquergood (Darci), Joy Conquergood, Erica Herman Readicker (Scott), Rob Mauws (Linda), and Christina Vandergaag (John); great-grandchildren Danielle Conquergood and Hanna Mauws.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Bob, parents, her sister, Gladys Egge and her brother, Arnie Rufsvold.
A memorial service will be held at Pondera Valley Lutheran Church on Dec. 29 at 3 p.m.
