Josephine “Josie” Marie Caputo died peacefully on Dec. 4 at PMC Extended Care with her loving friends and family at her side.
A vigil will be held on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at Pondera Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held on Dec. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery in San Gabriel, Calif. Pondera Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Josephine “Josie” Marie Caputo was born on March 19, 1915, in New York City, N.Y., to Theresa and Joseph Tufaro. She was a part of a large Italian family raised in Edison, N.J. Josie graduated from Oak Tree School in Edison, N.J. She began working as a seamstress in a clothing manufacturing company at the age of 14. On June 19, 1937 she married Anthony John Caputo in South Plainfield, N.J. In 1953 they moved their family to Alhambra, Calif. After moving to California, she was a housewife and a daycare provider. In the early 70’s she began working at Lido’s Bakery and the Julie’s Bakery in Alhambra, Calif.
Josie enjoyed traveling, being with her family, gardening and cooking. She was a fabulous cook and someone who always kept busy. She was involved in St. Therese Catholic Church in Alhambra, Calif., where she was a Sentinel in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society and an active member of the Italian Catholic Federation.
In 2004, Josie was moved to the Pondera Medical Center Extended Care Facility in Conrad where she received extraordinary care and support by the staff.
She is survived by her children, Ralph Caputo and Phyllis Ann (Jerry) Philipps both of Conrad, Tony (Lynn) Caputo of Fletcher, N.C., Richard (Kim) Caputo of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Theresa (Greg) Renn of Santa Fe, N.M.; sister, Nancy Pastermak of Edison, N.J.; nine grandchildren and many many great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Anthony; her son, Michael Caputo; and a grandson, Michael Baumgart.
Memorials are suggested to the Pondera Medical Center Extended Care facility.
