Christian Edward Berg, 85, died on May 3 of complications of Alzheimer’s. Dr. Berg practiced optometry in Conrad for 35 years.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael’s Church on May 9 at noon. There will be a vigil at the Pondera Funeral Home on May 8 at 7 p.m.
Dr. Berg was born May 26, 1927, in Hettinger, N.D. After graduating from Hettinger High School, he joined the U.S. Navy just before World War II ended. He attended Dickinson State College and graduated from Pacific University with a doctorate degree in optometry. He came to Conrad on Jan. 1, 1954. His wife and three children arrived 19 days later on the coldest Montana day on record, it was -70.
Dr. Berg was a member of Jaycees and the Lions Club. He served on the Conrad School Board and as Vice-President of the Montana Optometric Association.
After retiring from optometry, he and his wife Dolores embarked on second careers as owner-operators of a new Super 8 Motel in Belen, N.M. They returned to Conrad in 1996.
Over his long life, Dr. Berg enjoyed hiking, camping, boating, golfing and playing cards. He was an especially good poker player!
He is survived by Dolores, his wife of nearly 65 years; his children Laura (Bill), Scott, Michele, Michael (Karen), Karen, Kathy, Brian (Carrie), Tim and Chris (Jackie); sisters Peggy and Ann; grandchildren, Ashlee, Simon, Shane, Blaine, Zeb, Dawson, Bridger and Cassidy; great-grandchildren, Serena and Matthew; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, Chris and Addie Berg, and sister Joyce preceded him in death.
The family thanks the staff at the Pondera Medical Center Extended Care Unit for their kind and thoughtful care over the past year and a half.
