Mary Elsie Wood Hefty McLean

Mary Elsie Wood Hefty McLean    Elsie passed away on February 10 in Spokane Valley Hospital of pneumonia following a brief illness.   She was born Dec. 12, 1918 in Conrad, to George and Elizabeth Wood, the second youngest of 7 children.  (For an idea of what conditions were like, see the 1979 movie Heartland, starring Rip Torn)  Three of her sisters are still living, Mabel Feig of Marshfield, Wis., Elizabeth Jean Wood of Portland, Ore. and Evelyn Wood, of Conrad.
    Elsie married Norman Hefty in Conrad on May 7, 1938.  She gave birth to Susan on May 6, 1947 and Jim on March 5, 1953.  An intelligent and strong woman, she worked at a variety of jobs before her kids were born.   After they were in school, she worked as credit manager at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton until her retirement in the early 1980’s.  
    Elsie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Norm, who died of complications following heart surgery on Sept. 17, 1984, and her daughter, Susan Kay, who died on Oct. 2, 1987.  Following Norm’s death, she married Don McLean, (who had been best man at her wedding to Norm, and had remained a bachelor for 73 years).  She is survived by her husband, Don of Spokane Valley, Wash.; son, Sat Tara, and three grandchildren; Sue’s daughter, Shauna Byrnes Howington of Smyrna, Ga.; Sat Tara’s daughter, Shabad-Ratan and son, Sat-Santokh; her sisters and several nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 171 Lewis Lane, Hamilton, on April 16 at 1:30 p.m..  Following her wishes, Elsie’s ashes were scattered by her son, Sat Tara, near Norm and Susan’s at Canyon Creek near Hamilton.
