Funeral services were held for Janet Lakso, 77, of Verndale, Minn., formerly of Deer Creek, Minn., on May 9 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek with Pastor Paul Yearyean officiating.  The pallbearers were Jeff Gades, Blake Gades, Kyle Copelan, Marc Helmrichs, Brian Hoyhtya and Larry Pearson. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Darleen Wendt.  Special music was provided by Barbara Hoyhtya.  Janet was laid to rest in Inman Cemetery in Henning, Minn. 

Janet Marie Hoyhtya was born on March 5, 1937 in Leaf Lake Township, rural Ottertail, Minn. Her parents were the late Ernest Phillip and Hulda Marie (Fiskari) Hoyhtya.  Janet was baptized on April 11, 1937.  On June 17, 1951 Janet was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills.  Janet attended school at the District #135 south of the Leaf Lakes, and graduated from the Henning High School with the Class of 1955.  She belonged to the Leaf Lakers 4-H Club. Janet attended the Venus Academy of Beauty Culture in 1955 and was employed in Wahpeton, N.D., as a beautician.  

On Aug. 16, 1958 Janet was united in marriage to Marlan Dale Copeland.  They were married for 30 years and their marriage was blessed with four children.  Janet and Marlan made their home in Conrad in 1965, where Janet was employed with Pondera Medical Center in the Respiratory Therapy and Sterile Processing.  Janet enjoyed working with children, was a leader in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and was employed on the District level to instruct leaders of the Cub and Boy Scouts.  Janet held several offices in the Pondera Lutheran Church women’s group, also making quilts for Lutheran World Relief.   

In 1987 Janet moved back to Minnesota, where she attended Nurses Aid School at the Perham Hospital, and was employed at the Mills Community Home in New York Mills.  

On Dec. 1, 1990 Janet was united in marriage to Marvin Matthew Lakso at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek.  Marvin passed away July 8, 2001.   Janet was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #238, Trinity Lutheran Church LWML, Inman Cemetery Association and the Sew & Sew Forth Club.  She was an avid quilter and enjoyed making teddy bears.   

Janet had recently made her home in Verndale.  On May 2, Janet passed away peacefully at the Knute Nelson Care Center in Alexandria, Minn.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Kay (Jeff) Gades of Bertha, Minn.; sons, Dale Copeland of Broadus, Lyle Copeland of Chico, Calif., Laurel (Kendra) Copeland of Clearwater, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kyle, Christina, Blake, Troy and Briana; sisters, Mildred (Melvin) Helmrichs of Deer Creek and Phyliss (Rodney) Haarstad of Miltona, Minn.; brothers, Harold Hoyhtya of Sun City, Ariz., Wesley (Barbara) Hoyhtya of Hector, Minn., Steven (Ruby) Hoyhtya of Wadena, Minn.; sister-in-law Kitti Hoyhtya of Cottage Grove, Minn.; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Preceding Janet in death were her parents; husband Marvin; brothers Donald and Emil (Nancy) Hoyhtya; and great-nephew Scott Hoyhtya.
