Ruth J. Schmidt, 95, died May 16 at Pondera Medical Center Extended Care Facility, where she had been a resident for several years.

Ruth was born in Williston, N.D. on Jan. 20, 1919 to Vivian and Floyd Bissell. Most of her childhood was spend in Conrad. She later graduated from Conrad High School in 1937 and met the love of her life, Herb Schmidt.

Herb and Ruth were united in Las Vegas, Nev., in 1941, and were married nearly 60 years. They resided in southern California for several years but returned to Conrad after sons Robert and Joel were born.

Ruth was a stay-at-home mother of five children and later worked as a secretary for several local agencies.

She was a past member of Eastern Star, the Soroptomist Club and a long-time member of the First Christian Church of Conrad.

Ruth loved camping, fishing and reading good books. She was an avid Griz fan, always wearing her Griz sweatshirt on game day. She was an outstanding cook and her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls were coveted by friends and family alike. Ruth always had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herb; her siblings, Shirley, Floyd and Ron.

Ruth is survived by her sons Robert (Susan) of Bedford, N.H., Joel (Carolyn) of Missoula, James (Pamela) of Lewisville, Texas, Michael (Shirley) of Brady; daughter Nancy (Larry) Callahan of Dickinson, N.D.; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Per Ruth’s wishes, her remains have been cremated and will be buried beside her beloved husband. A private family celebration of her life will take place this summer.
