Margaret (Miller) Kochman    Margaret  (Miller) Kochman, 85, passed away on May 18, at her home in Helena of natural causes.
Margaret was born in Anaconda on September 17, 1922, to Nathan and Clara Miller. She graduated from Killion Normal College in Dillon, in 1944, and went on to a career in teaching.
While employed in Seattle, Wash., she heard about an opening in Bynum. Margaret applied and was hired, then took the train from Seattle to Bynum, where she became the 1st through 3rd grade teacher at Bynum Elementary.
The rumor was that Margaret moved to Bynum to find the man of her dreams, and she was successful. Her teaching career was interrupted when Margaret met George Kochman. They were married June 1, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Choteau. In 1948, with their first son on the way, she left the school and became a full time farm wife at the homestead west of Bynum in the Blackleaf Canyon. A “city gal”, Margaret had to learn the “farmin’ biz”, and all that goes with it.
In 1960, Margaret and George moved themselves and the family (three boys by this time) to Conrad. There, Margaret adapted the ways of the “farmin’ biz” to those of the “appliance sales and repair and Laundromat” biz. And gave birth to a daughter. A surprise, yes, but a very welcome one.
She said goodbye to Conrad in February 2004 and moved to Hunter’s Point Retirement Home in Helena, where she had many friends and was close to family.
Throughout her life, Margaret loved music and culture. She made sure that all of her children developed their musical skills, was active in church choirs, played organ and piano, in church and other functions, and loved to attend concerts. The Kochman home was always alive with the joyous sounds of Mom’s piano and voice. She was known for her generosity, her intelligence and her compassion. But much more than that she loved her family, and was Mother to us and to many of our friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Charles, Richard, Leo and Cyril, and by her husband George.
She is survived by her sister Noel Shore, of Texas; her sons, Carl (“George”) Kochman and Michael (Terry) Kochman, of Helena, and Patrick Kochman, of East Helena; her daughter Claire (Aubrey) Miller, of Harlowton; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grand children.
Funeral arrangements were with the Pondera Funeral Home in Conrad, where services were held on May 22 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice in Margaret’s name.
