NICE RIDE — Calvin Ophus had rides of 65-76 to place second in the high school championships and qualify for the Montana High School rodeo team. He will be going to Wyoming in July for the National High School Finals Rodeo. Photo courtesy of Vickie Ophus
The MHSRF (Montana High School Rodeo Finals) were held in Bozeman June 10-13.
Our local competitors made a good showing in the rodeo. Allison Bruner, Calvin Ophus, Malia VandenBos, Rye O’Neil and Will Shirley represented Pondera County.
The wet and cold weather made conditions less than favorable but as the saying goes, “the show must go on”.
Bruner competed in barrels and pole bending. She had times of 20.01 and 21.02 in barrels while in pole bending she had a no time for crossing the line and then a 30.95 due to a fallen pole.
Ophus rode bareback and scored 65 on his first ride, 76 on his second winning the round.
The awards include the $360 Everett and Helen Elliot Scholarship that will be awarded to a student preparing for a career involving music or business and the $500 Mike and Blanche Moritz Memorial Scholarship that will be awarded to an education major.
I-15 PROJECT — This graphic from the county commissioners shows the work being done for a new overpass on I-15. When done, there will no longer be a circular entrance or exit, but a preferred diamond configuration. Graphic courtesy of Pondera County Commissioners
The highway improvement project on the Conrad I-15 North Interchange has begun.
The construction costs for this project are nearly $2 million and Nelcon, Inc. of Kalispell was awarded the contract.
The project consists of reconfiguring the existing northbound ramps from the current partial cloverleaf style to a diamond configuration.
The project is set to be complete by the end of August 2010.
The reconstruction of the overpass brings other projects forward as well. This project will allow for a County road to be built that will connect the overpass with the east frontage road and will also allow access to the City of Conrad’s new Industrial Park.
